The Wausau Nordic United ski team recently participated in the Wisconsin Nordic Ski League State Championship meet held at the famed Birkie Start area and Telemark Trail System. The team had some outstanding results with both boys and girls teams placing 5th overall in the final team standings.

For individuals, the Boys had several top 10 finishers led by Luke Brown who finished the two-day event with an 8th place finish. He finished 7th in the classic leg and 8th in the freestyle portion. Alex Zavadoski skied to a 9th place finish in the classic race on Saturday. On the girls side, Eleanor Bennet led the girls with an 10th place finish for the classic portion and 12th for the freestyle that combined for a 14th place finish in the two-day pursuit.

The State Meet was run over two days, Feb 12-13, using an interval start on Saturday and skiing a classic race. On Sunday, the skiers are sent out using a pursuit format where the leader from Day 1 goes first followed by the rest of the field based on their time back from the leader. The overall winner is determined by the combined time of the two days of skiing. This year, the skiers were met with some brutal cold conditions that hovered around zero most of the weekend and delayed starts on both days when the tempertures were too cold to start.
