Wausau Nordic Birkie Warriors and Inga

Three Wausau Nordic Ski Club members played a significant role in this year’s American Birkebeiner. The trio, John and Beth  Oestreich and Mike Cavanaugh skied in the ceremonial roles of two Viking warriors escorting Queen Inga as they rescued Prince Haakon during the Norweigian Civil War in the year 1206. The three skied this year’s Birkie clad in traditional clothing and skiing on wooden skis traveled the length of the course on Saturday reenacting the famous rescue and escape. All three are members of the Wausau Nordic Ski Club and are also coaches for our racing Night Gliders team. The picture below shows them at the start of the race.
